Canadian Prime Minister Carney announced that the two countries have agreed to launch “negotiations on a comprehensive economic and security partnership”.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney released a statement in Montreal, Canada, regarding his phone call with US President Donald Trump.
“President Trump has expressed his respect for Canada’s sovereignty both privately and in public statements,” Carney said, noting Trump’s stance on Canada’s sovereignty.
Regarding the tariffs imposed by the US on Canadian steel, aluminum and automobile products, Carney said, “President Trump has made no statement that the tariffs will be withdrawn. But I emphasize that this process is just the beginning. We have seen once again the importance of intensive negotiations.”
Carney explained that the relationship between the two countries is in a process of change and emphasized the need to ensure that Canada can adapt to rapidly changing global dynamics.
