United Nations statement on the latest US strikes in Yemen

United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed concern over the civilian casualties in the US airstrikes on Yemeni territory on April 17-18.

The statement, which noted that aid was sent to the region after the attack, referred to reports that the airstrikes caused significant damage to port infrastructure and that oil spills could enter the Red Sea.

The statement also called for an “immediate halt” to Houthi attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea. Emphasizing the risk of further escalation of the conflict in the region, the statement reiterated Guterres’ call for the “immediate and unconditional release” of all UN staff and other workers detained by the Houthis.
